Elm Wood Information

Uniform
Thank you for your support in sending the children in uniform. We feel that uniform is important as it gives the school and the children a good impression when we have vistors or go out on visits. The school colours are blue or black. We encourage children to wear blue jumpers with the school logo, a white shirt and black trousers/skirt. Please can you send the children to school in black shoes or black trainers.
When you buy new P.E. kit, please could you buy the school colours i.e, white T-shirt, navy shorts/ tracksuit bottoms if possible. Pumps are being sold in school by Mr Vyse @ £2 each. Back to top
School Start Times
Please could you remember that school starts at five to nine for all children. The first 10 minutes of the day are generally spent working on spellings or completing work before the larger lessons start at 9.10. To help your child and us please ensure they are in their lines ready to come into school at 8.55am.
We will be asking the children to sign in after 9 o'clock so that we can keep a record of children who are regularly late. Back to top
School Finishing Times
Key Stage One classes end at 3.15pm
Key Stage Two classes end at 3.20pm
Please make sure that if you are collecting a Key Stage One child that Key Stage Two lessons are not disturbed, we would appreciate it if you could wait in the Junior playground for your child to come out at 3.20pm to avoid blockages in the corridor. Back to top

Homework
We believe that homework is a very important aspect of your child's education it helps you to find out what your child is doing in class and enables the children to practise vital skills. Please make sure that your child completes their homework and hands it in on time to help them do the best that they can. We always encourage children to read every day at home, we hope that you will be able to spare some time to share a book with your child whether they are in Reception or Year 6. Back to top
Playtime Snacks
Children are allowed to bring a small snack to school for break time. We ask that children only bring in a piece of fruit or raw vegetables such as, carrots, plums, apples etc. This is just one of our measures to encourage healthy eating in school. Back to top
Absences
If a child is absent from school we ask that you please contact us on the first day of their absence so that we know why they are not in school. If they are likely to be ill for an extensive period then it is possible for teachers to provide some work to ensure that they do not fall behind in their studies.
If you are planning a holiday which coincides with school then please make sure you fill in a holiday form which can be obtained from our secretary.
New rules have come into effect regarding unauthorised absences from school - see this news story for more information Back to top
Medicines in school
If your child requires medicine in school we need to have a filled in form before we are able to administer it. The forms can be found in the main school office. Once we have the form the medicine will be administered as you have directed. Back to top
Water Bottles
Recent research has found that children do not drink enough water throughout the day and that those who do generally concentrate better and learn better. After a trial period in Year 2 and Year 6 we have decided to allow children water bottles in class to drink during lessons. Bottles must have a sport's cap to prevent spillages and be filled up before school ready for the day ahead. Children will not generally be allowed to fill their bottles during the school day as it will disrupt their learning. Back to top
Phase leaders

If you have a question or a problem that you need to deal with the class teacher is normally your first contact point. If for some reason the class teacher is unavailable or you feel unable to speak to the class teacher then the next contact point is the phase leader.
